Most evidence suggest that Eirik the Red┤s son Leif Ericsson "Leif the Lucky" was born at Eirkisstadir. Leifur became the first Europian to set foot in North America,

Hidden away in west  Iceland, Dalabygg­ was the starting point for one of the most exciting chapter in the history of mankind:  

The Viking Age expansion westward which took explorers first to Greenland and later to the shore of North America

Archaeological research at Eiriksstadir in the mid-20th century and again in 1997-1999 revealed the site of a 10th-century longhouse. The site remains visible, and in addition a reconstruction of the longhouse has been built.
